Too Cold To Grill?

Frozen propane tank

Last night I tried firing up the grill to put on a couple ribeyes I bought from Costco when I noticed the fire seemed a little on the weak side. Remembering my experience with purging the gas lines, I tried to run the gas and then hit the ignition a few seconds later to purge the lines… but no luck. I tried this about two or three times to no avail and then my mind went back to high school physics (recall that my tank is very new and used once). PV = nRT.

Essentially it says that if you keep everything constant and just drop the temperature, you’re going to see a fall in either pressure or volume. Since the volume of propane isn’t changing that much, you’re thus lowering the pressure in the tank so the fuel isn’t going to come out as fast as you’re used to.

While I don’t know what the temperature threshold is for grilling with a propane tank, it’s something to consider if you’re going to grill in the winter.

Just how cold are you talking about anyways.

We were in the frigid 60’s the other night and all seemed to work fine : )

Just finished a couple of burgers. It is 20 degrees with a moderate wind. Didn’t spend much time watching them cook. Burgers turned out great cooked them about 8 minutes on each side at med high heat. A little longer than usual, but the grill worked fine.

It was in the teens I think, at night, and the wind wasn’t too bad. The pressure from the gas just didn’t seem too strong and the tank is brand new (and still heavy).

When I was a kid, I once grilled hamburgers in below zero whether. Why? Well, why not? It’s never too cold to grill! It took a bit longer than usual, but nothing tastes better than a freshly grilled burger in the dead of winter. This was old-fashioned charcoal, though, so there were no problems with gas pressure.
