Starting A Propane Grill In Windy Conditions
Grilled on October 24th, 2007 in Grilling TipsI know that this might go without saying for grillers with more experience but last night I tried starting my grill in pretty window conditions. First of all, unless your grill is sturdy enough and heavy enough that it can stand a gust or two or five, don’t bother grilling. If the wind can tip your grill, it’s too dangerous to be grilling. Second, start the burners, without igniting, with the cover down. This allows the fuel to remain near the starter and not get blown away into the atmosphere.
Why cover it in windy conditions and not in calmer weather? It’s because the wind will dissipate your propane and the starter can’t ignite anything. When it’s calmer, the fuel collects near the burners so the dissipation issue is a non-problem.
That’s your novice grill tip of the day. ![]()
