Someone Put Lava Rocks In My Grill!

Did you get a second hand grill like Peggy did and find out you’re also the proud new owner of some pet rocks? Are you now rightfully concerned that all the other propane grills you’ve owned didn’t or don’t have their own pet rocks? Not to worry, those are called lava rocks and they’re there to protect your propane burners and help distribute heat.

In my current grill, I have these long metal plates that run the length of the propane burners so I won’t need any lava rocks to protect the burners. If you don’t have the plates and grease can drip unabated to the burners, you’ll want to find some lava rocks (they’re extremely porous) to cover up your burners. If you already have something there, such as metal plates, don’t worry about the rocks.

    Ron,
I think you need to do two things. The first is let your grill get nice and hot, 300 deg , before you put the chicken on. The second thing you need to do is clean your grill. Clean the grate, clean the shield, clean everything. The gray is coming from either low heat or a lot of smoke from the drippings that have burnt onto the heat shield.
