Okay, a ridiculously nice smoker is expensive but I ran into a coworker at Costco the other day, where he picked up more pork chops than I could eat in a month because he was about to embark on an 8 hour smoking session with some maple shards he cut down himself, and he told me that he purchased a $150 smoker from Bass Pro Shops, which is located in a nearby mall. I peeked on the site, to see how much a smoker would run me, and saw a $35 Smoke’n Grill Smoker that’s capable of smoking 50 lbs. of meat.

Keep in mind, though, that you’ll still have to buy your own thermometer, because the built-in ones wear out fast, and aren’t very reliable even when they’re new.
Get an electronic thermometer with a remote meat probe. Use that to measure the temperature (and hence doneness) of the meat, while you use the built-in one for the much-less-critical task of monitoring the temperature of the smoke.
