Propane Taxi Review

I received a mailing the other day for a new service called Propane Taxi. For $21.99, they’ll come to your house, replace your propane tank, and you can save yourself a trip to the store. If you are in a rush, they offer next day service for $4.99 and same day service for $9.99. Standard delivery is absolutely free.

I learned about them because of a mailer I received that offered a $10 tank, which is more than 50% off their regular price, and that coupon code is PROPANE740 (Expires 7/31/2010). They have a ton of coupons for new customers, all for a $10 tank, including PROPANE6158 (Exp. 8/31/10) and PROPANE9300 (Exp. 9/30/10), so do a quick search online to find an active coupon.

As for delivery, I just left the tank out on my front steps before 7AM and it was replaced sometime during the day. For $10, it’s a steal and worth doing at least once. I’m not sure if it’s worth $22, as the local Home Depot is only a few minutes away, but for $10 it’s a no brainer.

Yes, $10 is definitely a deal. But, for just $2 more than HD it’s well worth the premium after that first order. We like to keep at least one propane tank full as a spare – so emergency deliveries will not be a worry. Even with HD being only 5 minutes away – the time it takes to load the one or two empty cylindars into the car or truck – haul it over and exchange them makes up for the $2.
And not to mention, my past two visits to HD have been a true excercise in patience. The “automated and supposedly more convenient” machine that HD now has generally runs with a 50% SLA. And the drill seems to be after two attempts at using it – you are then required to find a service associate for assistance. Then after the service associate also runs into the same roadblock that you run into – you are then required to go into the store and line up at one of the few open registers. Overall – what was supposed to be a quick run to HD for propane ends up as and ordeal lasting well over 30 minutes. That is 30 minutes that I will not ever get back.
Then on two different occassions in the past year – HD was out of full cylindars. One of those occassions was before a holiday weekend – so I’ll give them a pass on that one. Which left me the option of going to one of the various gas stations along Route 40 in Ellicott City. Almost all of them half some small propane exchange capability – but, they will surely rip you off. The station I went to, just around the corner from HD wanted $25 cash for an exchange and something like $28 if I wanted to use a credit card. And please – don’t even let me get started on my experience at WalMart with their propane exchange – that’s an hour of my life I will not ever get back. Kudos out to Propane Taxi.
