Grilling A Pizza

Grilling a pizza? You read that correctly, you can cook a pizza on the grill just as easily as you could in an oven and impart a little bit of that smoky goodness you normally associate with grilling. I was pretty surprised too, since I never even thought about doing that until reader CK sent me a Pittsburgh Post Gazette article detailing how to do it.

All it takes is a prebaked pizza crust (the grill doesn’t take kindly to cooking soft gooey dough) and your typical pizza ingredients. If you’ve never made one in the oven, the trick is to basically cook the ingredients beforehand and just use the heat of the oven to melt the cheese and heat up the sauce just a little bit. You’ll learn that if you’ve ever put raw onions on pizza and thought it would be cooked by the oven!

The only downside to this is that your pizza will, obviously, be restricted by how large your grill is, which is probably going to be smaller than the oven your home. The idea sounds good though and it doesn’t look any harder than using an oven so I look forward to trying this sometime.
