Grilling A Pizza
Grilled on April 8th, 2007 in GeneralI’ve never tried grilling a pizza on a charcoal grill before but this little recipe from the Food Network piqued my interest and it’s definitely something I want to try in the near future. Right now my fiancee and I make pizza in the oven, it’s a fairly simple process because you don’t need to do any of the rotating required on a grill (since in the oven the heat is more evenly distributed) but you also don’t get any sort of “other” flavor from the cooking process.
One concern I’d have with grilling a pizza would be temperature regulation because it’s not like you can “turn it down” when it’s too hot (at least with charcoal, I’d think this isn’t that interesting with propane) so you’ll have to be considerably more diligent grilling a pizza than just throwing it in the oven.
Has anyone ever tried this?

I use a premade pizza crust (boboli, etc) and that works well. I have a nice little baking sheet that has holes in the bottom that lets the flames kiss the crust, and all you’re really looking to do is heat the crust and melt the cheese.
Yes, I have tried this on a charcoal grill and a gas grill…it is awesome. The grill flavor is best if you keep the top lid on the grill. The smoked flavor gives the pizza something normal ovens or pizza ovens don’t. This is making me hungry.
My soon-to-be wife has been known to grill a pizza from time to time. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve seen her do it. She used a store brand from a supermarket back in Boston. It came out good, but I didn’t take any notes on the grilling of it.
