Are Propane Fryers Unsafe?
Grilled on November 20th, 2007 in SafetyI read a recent post on ConsumerReports.org that indicated that propane fryers are unsafe! In fact, the Underwriters Laboratory (that ubiquitous UL you see on a lot of different things) refuses to certify them for safety and the National Fire Protection Association warns against their use. The problem is that Consumer Reports doesn’t really go into why propane fryers aren’t safe and the post reads more like an advertisement for Masterbuilt Turk ‘N’ Surf fryers!
So, I went to dig in a little more as to why the UL refuses to certify propane fryers and discovered another ConsumerReports article that discusses why its unsafe. They list reasons why fryers are unsafe in general, whether electric or propane powered, and that’s because of the oil involved. It’s definitely worth reading if you have an oil-based fryer because it outlines all the risks involved in using it (mostly involving spilling oil).
Luckily, we’ll be firing up an no oil propane fryer this Thanksgiving courtesy of Charbroil!
